GOT IT GOIN' ON®: Empowerment Program for Girls

START YOUR OWN GOT IT GOIN’ ON® GIRLS CLUB OR EMPOWERMENT PROGRAM!  The award winning Got It Goin’ On® Empowerment Model (GIGO) utilizes the GIGO-II self-esteem handbook as the foundation for its curriculum.  It offers concrete tools for helping girls reach their full potential.  Adult caregivers or service providers use the GIGO-II Facilitator’s Guide in conducting the sessions.  GIGO, a gender specific program, promotes character development, enhances critical thinking, and accesses untapped resources of power, wisdom and imagination through an innovative curriculum that integrates intellectual, emotional, spiritual, and physical development. 

The following issues have been sited as critical to the healthy social and emotional development of adolescent girls throughout the world (Tailor these issues to your target population – add others as relevant):

  • Respect for self and others
  • Respect for adults (Teachers, Parents, etc.) and how to support healthy behavior when it is not modeled in the home
  • Learning Values and Healthy Decision Making Skills: Advocate for social change
  • Civic Engagement, Volunteerism and Philanthropy
  • Bullying and Peer (Girl-to-Girl) Aggression
  • Hygiene
  • Setting Goals
  • Equality in Education and Academic Achievement           
  • College and Career Preparation                                   
  • Healthy Relationships – Setting Boundaries; Sexual Safety
  • Mental, Emotional and Physical Health
  • *Parent/Guardian Support; Positive Role Models
  • Healthy & Accurate Information about Sex, Sexuality and STDs (including HIV/AIDS) & Abstinence
  • Social Networking and Cyber Safety
  • Trafficking

PROGRAM FORMAT:

  • 4x month workshops held on Saturdays or after school during the week (once per week) or 1x per month:
  • 1.5 – 2 hour workshops scheduled as an after-school program
  • 2 – 3 hour workshops scheduled as a Saturday enrichment program.
  • Workshops will address girls’ issues in an interactive, educational as well as entertaining fashion.  It is the goal of the facilitator to create an atmosphere of trust, respect, safety and sisterhood.  Got It Goin’ On-II: Power Tools for Girls!is the handbook that will be used during the discussions.  The Got It Goin’ On-II Facilitator’s Guide is the teacher’s guide.  Additional resources can also be used to supplement this text.

  • Intellectual Fitness: Setting Goals & Staying in School
  • Healthy Relationships/Healthy Communication: Getting Along w/Others
  • A Positive Place in Society: Social Skills for the Hip-Hop Generation
  • Staying Out of Harm's Way: Saying NO to Drugs, Violence  (Rape) and Pre-Marital Sex (Abstinence)
  • Looking Your Best: Grooming, Hair/Skin Care & Fashion Tips
  • Other Important Teen Issues: Bullying and Peer Aggression, Equality in Education, College and Career Preparation, Leadership, Civic Engagement, Volunteerism and Philanthropy, Social Networking and Cyber Safety, Trafficking, and other issues specifically affecting girls

 

CUSTOMIZED WORKSHOPS FOR GIRLS:
Workshop(s) should be designed for the specific needs of the adolescent female population served.  The model combines  “no-parent zone” girls’ raps with physical activity, presentations, community service, field trips and special events (tailor to your objectives).  

PROGRAM GOALS:

  • To assist girls in developing/maintaining high self-esteem and a positive self-image, based on cultural pride and identity;
  • To assist girls in developing a foundation for sisterhood, community, and healthy relationships; and 
  • To encourage girls to develop a personal action plan for their lives based upon "standards of excellence."

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Comfortable space to accommodate the participants safely along with an area for physical activity
  • TV/VCR (if possible)
  • CD player (something to play music on)
  • *GIGO-II Handbooks for each participant (*Required)
  • *GIGO-II Facilitator’s Guide (Training Required)
  • *GIGO™ Gear (optional)
